ENGINEERING SUPPORTS AND TECHNIQUES FOR THE MINIMIZATION OF EFFECTS OF DISASTERS

Safety of our planet is in our hands,
So why wait, when we can bring a change??"

Disasters are adverse or unfortunate events or great and sudden misfortunes which have a profound effect on society and the nation. They may occur due to natural causes such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods or cyclones or due to man-made causes such as blasts, missile attacks or fire.

Natural hazards cannot be avoided, but timely, accurate prediction of hydro climate extremes helps societies to prepare for and mitigate disasters and to reduce losses in infrastructure and productive activities. Early warning systems and forecasts provide lead time, which together with public awareness, education and preparedness can allow people to act quickly in response to information, thereby increasing human safety and reducing economic losses from natural disasters.

Engineers and technicians play a vital role in preventing and protecting our environment from such havoc. Engineers of various fields contribute in different ways to make the society a safer place in the future.

ROLE OF CIVIL ENGINEERS

During a large scale disaster, civil engineering structures like buildings, bridges, dams, roads, water supply projects, coastal structures, infrastructure facilities etc are severely affected, causing immense inconvenience to people and disrupting routine life.  Prevention of natural disasters is not possible but reduction in the undesirable effects of disasters can be the only way to cope with them. The role of civil engineers, whatever post they may hold in the field, is very important in reducing the risk of damage to buildings during disasters. From the planning stage to the execution of civil engineering projects, the paramount consideration is that care should be taken by all concerned to ensure public safety in the event of a disaster.

ROLE OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERS

Biomedical engineering plays an essential role in effective health care delivery and is employed by multi-disciplinary clinical and research teams in developing strategies for the diagnosis and management of many medical conditions. It has demonstrated remarkable capacity to revamp health systems in resource-limited environments through improvements in diagnosis and treatment. The suddenness of disasters strains local health facilities by hugely increasing patient load. Following a disaster, hospitals become important critical care units needing heightened maintenance of equipment.

The engineers chief role will be to lay out the disaster management planning and post disaster recovery planning. They may also require to conduct surveys, of the plans being followed, from time to time.

Inculcating Your Life with Disaster Management is better than Replacing Your Life!”

Solutions to problems in resource-limited settings require innovative engineering and interdisciplinary technical skills to keep costs low and improve response times. Sustainable solutions require local ownership and participation and can create a new job market. Integrating biomedical technical skills with existing institutional expertise has the potential to strengthen national disaster management. In the long run, greater investment in engineering will allow for the self-sustaining and efficient operation in times of peace and crisis.

FASHION ... 'N INFLUENCE OF FASHION IN YOUTH

Fashion may be defined as the way of living, decorating, etc. which are popular today, but would soon lose their popularity. It is something passing and transitory, a mere craze of the moment to be looked down upon with contempt. For example, tight pants are the fashion today, but only a short while ago broad loose pants were the order of the day. If today a man appears in society wearing broad pants, he would be held up to ridicule, but only a few years ago they were the height of fashion, symbols of good taste and culture...

 a typical african jewellery.

Fashion is a tyrant; no tyrant is greater than that of fashion. Everyone tries to imitate the latest fashions. The youth specially are mad after it. They would not mind any expenditure to be in fashion. they must have their clothes cut according to the latest vogue, their hair made up according to the latest style, even if these places a heavy burden of their parents. Many of them realize that a particular fashion would soon pass away; even then they waste their money over it. Costly articles of dress are often discarded, only because the fashion has passed away. Girls, specially educated ones, are worst sinners of this respect. They are crazy over Sarees of latest prints, ornaments of latest designs and other beauty aids which many happen to be popular at a  particular time. Often, the entire family has to suffer owing to their craze for fashion. many family discords and quarrels may be traced to this tyrant.

Such is the tyranny of the fashion that the fashion-drunk do not even care for their personal convenience. Popular articles of dress are often worn even if they make bodily movement difficult, and put the wearer to great hardship. Girls wear tight clothes, as tight as possible, even though the dress is entirely inconvenient. They are not move about to comfort, or to attend to their household work, but still tight dresses are worn because others also use them. They do not even care for modesty or decency in their craze for fashion. Similar is the case with young men, they continue to wear tight pants, even though they freely acknowledge that their dress is highly inconvenient for them. Fashion is a tyrant which exacts strict adherence to its orders from its slaves.

The fashion loving do not even care for their time. They have no sense of its value. Fashionable young men and women waste much of their time in make-up and dressing up. Modern girls waste their hours in applying lipstick, rouge powder and beauty aids. They must do that hair according to the latest style, however ridiculous it may be. They would go to bed with their hair well oiled so that there may be no need of oil the next day and they may go out with their hair dry, according to the fashion......

Studies may suffer but who cares for it?? Similarly, the fashion crazy young men waste their precious time in the pursuit of fashion they take hours over their hair.

Fashion is a way to show a person’s form of personal expression, a display of self-concept, the amount of wealth a person may have, and how the fashion and advertising industries influence them. But where has the influence come from that has made it such a huge importance in our everyday lives? The fashion, media and advertising industries, are very prominent in teenagers lives. Watching TV, celebrities that they see, searching the Internet, and reading magazines are the very way that teenagers come into contact with these industries, thus it is all around them. The advertising that the youth of today are being exposed to is misleading, very prominent in today’s society and are sending the wrong idea to the girls and boys of today. You only need to open a current magazine to observe that fashion is a focus in our community. Influence from fashion advertising can cause many strains on the teenager, their family and peer group. Today’s youth are given the unrealistic expectation that they can be perfect and are willing to do anything, to be that perfect person.

Clothes these days are getting more and more provocative. They are revealing more skin and sending the wrong message to today’s community. “Sexual images are now an "inescapable" part of a child's environment,” (Rose 2010). Sexuality has been portrayed in various media representations that can set a certain standard of ‘beauty’ that is misleading or unrepresentative. Many media industries have failed to protect today’s youth from the onslaught of sexualised content that today’s advertising bring. “Many parents are concerned that the media, fashion and its advertising are encouraging girls to dress more provocatively and promote the early adoption of a sexual identity,”

Celebrities are very influential in today’s society. Teenagers are constantly faced with the unrealistic expectation that they can be perfect and that they need to be perfect in order to feel confident.
All fashions are futile. They have a tendency to filter downwards. They spread from the rich to the poor and from the advance and prosperous countries to the backward and poor ones. By the time the fashion has reached from one class or country to another, it tends to be discard by the class or country which originated it. Many of those who try to be in fashion do know that it is fleeting. But even then they are madly followed as if nothing on earth matters more. Nothing brings out the tyranny of fashion better than this fact
